What Is Plan Management?
When you receive an NDIS plan, a key decision is how your funding is managed. There are three options: NDIA-Managed, Plan-Managed, and Self-Managed. You can mix and match across different support budgets.
Option 1: NDIA-Managed
The National Disability Insurance Agency handles all payments. Providers submit claims directly to the NDIS portal.
Pros: No paperwork for you, built-in fraud protection, good for complex needs.
Cons: Registered providers only, cannot negotiate rates, occasional portal delays.
Best for: Participants who prefer a hands-off approach, or who are just starting out.
Option 2: Plan-Managed
The NDIA funds an extra line item in your plan to pay for a registered plan manager who handles financial administration. They pay invoices, track spending, provide monthly statements, and handle reporting.
Pros: Access to unregistered providers (huge flexibility advantage), no bookkeeping for you, real-time budget tracking, can negotiate rates with unregistered providers.
Cons: Reliant on your plan manager being responsive, adds an intermediary, quality varies significantly.
The NDIS funds plan management costs separately - it does not come out of your support budgets.
Best for: Most participants. Best balance of flexibility and administrative simplicity.
Option 3: Self-Managed
You receive funding directly and are responsible for paying providers, keeping invoices, ensuring spending aligns with your plan, and reporting to the NDIA.
Pros: Maximum flexibility (use any provider), full financial control, may stretch your budget further through rate negotiation, can hire your own workers directly.
Cons: Significant administrative burden, compliance risk if misspending occurs, requires financial literacy and time, may create employer obligations.
Self-Management Tips: Open a dedicated bank account for NDIS funds, track every payment, keep all invoices for at least 5 years, and understand NDIS rules about approved expenses.
Best for: Participants with strong organisational skills who want maximum control.
Can I Change My Plan Management Type?
Yes. Request a change at your plan review or via an unscheduled review if circumstances have changed significantly.
