Why Choosing the Right Provider Matters
Your NDIS provider directly shapes the quality of your daily life. A great provider helps you reach your goals and respects your autonomy. A poor one drains your funding and leaves you worse off.
Step 1: Get Clear on What You Need
Before researching providers, clarify what supports you need:
- What support types? (personal care, occupational therapy, social support, plan management)
- How often? (daily, weekly, as-needed)
- Non-negotiables? (female worker, specific language, experience with your diagnosis)
- What are your goals?
Step 2: Check NDIS Registration
Registered providers have been vetted by the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission. If your plan is NDIA-managed, you must use registered providers. Unregistered providers can be excellent - if plan-managed or self-managed, you can use them.
Step 3: Research and Shortlist
Build a shortlist of 3 to 5 providers by asking your LAC or support coordinator for recommendations, searching ReferAus for Hunter Region providers with real reviews, and checking provider websites and reviews.
Step 4: Ask the Right Questions
- Do you have experience with my specific disability?
- Who will be my regular worker and can I meet them before committing?
- How do you handle worker absences?
- What does your service agreement cover and what is the exit clause?
- What is your complaints process?
- How do you measure whether my goals are being achieved?
- What qualifications do your workers hold?
Step 5: Understand the Service Agreement
Before signing, check: scope of services and rates, cancellation policy, exit clauses and notice periods, and complaint resolution process.
Step 6: Start With a Trial
Start with a short trial before committing long-term. Assess whether the worker is a good fit, whether the provider communicates well, and whether services are delivered as described.
Red Flags to Watch For
- Pressure to sign quickly
- Promises to maximise your plan (can mean over-servicing)
- No clear complaint process
- Reluctance to provide a written service agreement
- No workers compensation or public liability insurance
Your Rights as an NDIS Participant
- Be treated with dignity and respect
- Make your own decisions about your supports
- Access interpreters and culturally appropriate support
- Raise complaints without fear of losing your service
- Choose, change, or exit providers
